"Their expectations are unmatched," says the woman, tongue in cheek.
"Their expectations are unmatched," says the woman, tongue in cheek.
A Frenchwoman living in Singapore has lamented, tongue firmly in cheek, on TikTok: "It's so tiring to be friends with Singaporeans."
"Let's say you finally take care of yourself, nice makeup, nice outfit, feeling your best, what do they say? 'Wah, today wear so nice, ah, got what occasion?' Never just, 'You look good.' Always comes with suspicion," says Amandine Honvault in the 55-second clip, bemoaning the "unmatched expectations" of Singaporeans.
Singaporeans, she says, always try and one up you too: "Now you try to impress them, bring them to your favourite food spot, they take one bite and they hit you with, 'Next time I bring you eat better one.'
"But the moment they bring you to a place they choose, they gonna say, 'Last time nicer, now standard drop already.' The food can never be good enough."
Ms Honvault, who goes by the handle @new_to_singapore and has reportedly been in Singapore in 2019, concludes: "Even when you cook for them, you put effort, love, the whole thing, first thing they say, 'Why no rice?' The dish is basically irrelevant if there is no rice. You basically served air. Honestly, I am just trying to survive their standards at this point."
The video, posted on Aug 31, had garnered 136,400 views, more than 5,600 reactions and 400 comments at press time. It was also posted on Reddit where it received 308 upvotes and 135 comments.
Reactions were mixed, though the online comments on her video were generally friendly.
There were netizens who disagreed with her assessment of Singaporeans, with several suggesting she was mixing with the wrong crowd.
"You got the wrong friends, we are not like that," said a TikTokker.
"You got it all wrong," said another, before explaining: "When we say, 'Wah wear so nice ah? What's the occasion?' It's our way to invite you to tell us more. Even a, 'I just felt like wearing nicely today' is a great response."
Others did agree with her.
"Yep, sounds like us. We are exhausting people to be around," said a TikTok user.
"Spot on! Some just couldn't serve out simple, unadulterated compliments. It's simply not in their DNA," explained another.
One Redditor said: "I agree with her. This is so common (because) most locals are passive aggressive."
Some netizens offered advice on how to deal with her struggle.
"The trick is just to laugh and not take such comments seriously," said one Redditor. "Once you get used to dressing nicely everyday, if you stop dressing up or putting makeup, the next comment you'll hear is something like 'Are you sick? Not feeling well? Why you look so tired recently'?"
"It's just casual banter. Not to be taken seriously," added another,
Some even offered to be her friend. "Make friends with me -I will praise your outfit and makeup, very beautiful leh," offered one.
Ms Honvault had the final word, after a TikTokker pointed out: "It's just sarcasm."
"Thank you for getting it!" she replied. .
